Lil Poppa was born Alex Deaton in Jacksonville, Florida. He grew up in a lower-income household, and was raised by a single mother. From a young age, he was exposed to the rap game by his older cousins. He began writing his own music at the age of 12. In high school, he started to take music seriously and began posting his music on SoundCloud.
In 2017, Poppa released his breakout song “Die For Me” which quickly gained attention both locally and nationally. This song was followed by a string of successful singles such as “Gone” and “My City Needs Something” which both garnered millions of streams on streaming platforms. His music is heavily influenced by the Southern rap scene, and he is known for his heartfelt lyrics and catchy hooks. In 2018, he released his debut mixtape “Life Of A Sad Boy” which featured collaborations with artists such as Lil Durk and Lil Baby. In 2020, he released his second mixtape “Pray 4 Me” which was met with critical acclaim. Lil Poppa has been nominated for the XXL Freshman List in 2019 and for the BET Hip Hop Awards in 2020 for Best New Artist. In 2020, he released his sophomore album “Pray 4 Me” which was well received by fans and critics alike. He has also been featured in XXL Magazine and has been highlighted by The Fader as one of the “10 Rappers to Watch in 2020”.
