On January 13, 1968 - Johnny Cash walked into Folsom Prison with his wife and band looking for a career rebirth. Coming off a battle with drug addiction he had only recently beaten, marred with depression and facing a low ebb of his career. The idea of a concert inside the prison walls had been discussed for years, but his record company had resisted - it was only an executive shakeup & a need to throw anything at the wall to save what was left of Cash's career that finally got the idea approved - but they remained skeptical of the results. The legend goes that Cash's management mailed 2 prisons about the concept, San Quentin and Folsom - and Folsom happened to be the first to respond.
You could say it was a matter of fate than that at 9:30am, on a makeshift stage in the cafeteria, between PA announcements and banter about the warden and water quality - unfurled one of the most electrifiying live performances of all time. A 16 song set about criminals, drugs, murder, religion and more that practially singlehandidly created the concept of "Outlaw Country", and completely reshaped Cash's career and image. He was now, forever, the Man in Black.
Other Prison albums from Cash soon followed - but none quite capture a performer who truly needed this connecting with an audience who needed it just as badly, the way that Folsom Prison does.
We're thrilled to welcome ALAN GETTO back to Bottlerocket with an all-star band to recreate that performance in all of it's intense, dark, and desperate glory - we're celebrating the Man in Black this Black Friday!
