Samuel began in the early 90's as a queer female-fronted punk rock outfit that relentlessly toured the legendary DIY hardcore/punk circuit alongside notables of the time such as Avail, Promise Ring, Chamberlain, Anti-Flag, Grain, Kerosene 454 and dozens more. Born from the ashes of vocalist Vanessa Downing’s previous outfit Junction, Samuel was the flagship band of drummer Eric Astor’s label Art Monk Construction, which produced some of the most revered 7" releases of the era.
An untimely break up in 1995 ensured Samuel’s footprint in a long line of early emo/post hardcore legends would remain small albeit memorable, due to powerful live performances and hooky 7” releases capturing a sound that refused to fall neatly into any punk subgenre.
Reformed in 2021 as Samuel S.C. with friendships and chemistry well intact, the band's 25-years-later 2023 debut LP High Places carries forward the same momentum, emotion, and melodicism as their early work. The latest cycle in SSC’s remarkable lifespan is marked by the release of their Exit Scene 7”, featuring two blisteringly energetic, defiantly joyful and only mildly cynical bangers released on Landland Colportage, Oct. 2024.

Joy Viver, a name whose ancient origins and proper pronunciation can only be guessed, only remembered through story. When you combine something that you love to do with people that you love to be around you may well have discovered Joy Viver. In search of the mystical teachings of Joy Viver each member of the band had long ago embarked on separate quests along dusty roads, through tangled forests, upon snowy mountains. They ended up in the place where so many quests resolve, at the beginning…in a basement…writing songs of chivalry and courtly love. On your journey should you encounter these troubadours, allow your weary bones to take comfort in the healing notes of their trill.
