Liam Finn has always carved his own path. From the explosive guitar anthems of his early band Betchadupa, to his groundbreaking one-man live performances on The Late Show with David Letterman and Later… With Jools Holland, Finn has consistently challenged the conventions of the singer-songwriter format.
His latest solo project, Hyperverse, continues that spirit of innovation. Written, performed, and recorded entirely via livestream on Twitch, the album brings fans into the heart of his creative process, breaking new ground in the artist-audience relationship. The result is a collection of dynamic, cinematic guitar-pop songs that feel both immediate and timeless.
Raised in Aotearoa and now based in Los Angeles, Finn’s musical roots run deep. After Betchadupa’s acclaimed run on Flying Nun Records, his solo debut I’ll Be Lightning (2007) earned critical praise and showcased his singular vision—writing, performing, and producing the entire album himself. Follow-up albums FOMO and The Nihilist further solidified his reputation as a fearless creator.
Alongside solo work, Finn has taken on numerous side projects, including BARB (with Connan Mockasin and Lawrence Arabia’s James Milne), and composed the score for the 2017 documentary Susanne Bartsch: On Top.
A lifelong collaborator with his father Neil Finn, Liam officially joined Crowded House in 2018, co-writing and touring globally as a full band member. The band’s most recent album, Gravity Stairs, was released in 2024 with Finn contributing to the writing of The Howl & I Can’t Keep Up With You.
In one of many career highlights, Finn supported Pearl Jam on two sold-out nights at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium in 2024. He later joined Eddie Vedder and the band onstage for a special live performance - a special moment that underscored Finn’s stature among one of rock’s most respected artists.
Inspired by a solo performance in Auckland that reignited his creative fire, Finn launched Hyperverse as a live-streamed studio experiment. With fans watching and engaging in real time, the sessions became both raw and collaborative, drawing input from an international online audience. “It felt like having a roster of faceless, ageless, genderless producers,” Finn says.
The album captures that energy—alive, experimental, and deeply personal. As producer and mixer, Finn shaped each track with full creative freedom: “I wanted to see this through and have it sound exactly how I imagined.”
The result is what Finn calls “a composite of almost everything I’ve ever made as a musician.” It’s a self-portrait of an artist still in motion—innovative, fiercely independent, and driven by connection.
“It feels like a record for my teenage self,” he says. “I’m reflecting on actually feeling the same as I ever have since I was a teenager. But with some, I guess, wisdom.”
