Introducing BOTTLE TALKS, our brand new LECTURE SERIES featuring some of the most interesting academics in the city presenting their work in a good old fashion dive bar.

Our first lineup is a science double feature about the very distant past and the very fictional future!

Dr. Matthew C. Lamanna - Curator and Paleontologist from the Carnegie Museum

"Stupid Stuff in Jurrasic Park"

A good-natured takedown of some of the ‘science’ in what is - very predictably - one of my favorite film series of all time

Dr. Melanie L. Good - Pitt Professor

"Physics and Science Fiction"

Words like "force," "field," "radiation," "black hole" and "antimatter" are part of our culture; science fiction movies and popular science magazines use them all the time. What do these words really mean? How much of what we see in science fiction is based on real science and how much is pure fantasy? This course will emphasize the meanings of science terms and the way scientists really work, without getting bogged down in mathematics. Our goal will be to understand science terms and claims when we encounter them in fiction and the popular press. Along the way, we will discuss whether travel to other stars is possible, conditions for the existence of life, and whether other "dimensions" exist.

And open Q&As with both after!

PLUS! 100% of the ticket sales from this event will be donated back to the speakers research departments to help support their ongoing work!
