Hanukkah Rocks features songs from Jewish artists such as Leonard Cohen, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Carole King, Paul Simon and more. It was started as a secular appreciation of Judaism. It’s a way to celebrate Hanukkah, but it’s not traditionally religious. It’s a traveling show that combines the musicianship of Benjamin Cartel and friends, the songs of lengendary Jewish folk, rock and pop artists with local communities of singer songwriters in venues along the way.

Benjamin Cartel is a lifer — a workingman's songwriter whose journey has taken him across much of the world, first as a member of Kaiser Cartel — whose critically-acclaimed albums earned the duo a spot in the folk-pop revival of the 21st century — and later as an adventurous solo artist. His own brand of American roots rock into a sound that's at once fresh and familiar. Some call it dream-pop. Others call it Americana. "One producer even called me 'futro’ — a combination of retro and new influences," Cartel adds. I tend to resist being a ‘genre’ artist. I just want to make the best Benjamin Cartel music."

"The namesake co-leader of Kansas rock duo Kaiser Cartel, Benjamin Cartel, took inspiration from Yo La Tengo’s famous “8 Nights of Hanukkah” series and is out to prove Christians aren’t the only ones who can have a rocking holiday season. Long tied to the Twin Cities, he has invited a lot of his many musician friends of different backgrounds from the scene to cover songs by Jewish music legends such as Leonard Cohen, Neil Diamond, Lou Reed, Carole King and a certain Iron Range native. Participants will include Ryan Smith of Soul Asylum, Pony Hixton Smith of The Melismatics, Adam Levy of Turn Turn Turn, Ryan Traster, Chris Perricelli of Little Man, Willie Wisely, Dan Israel and Claire Spinti, Davina Lozier, and Danny Wolf" - Star Tribune 2025
