“Joe Pernice is one of the most beloved and respected singers-songwriters of our generation.” - TIDAL
Born in Massachusetts, singer-songwriter, author and producer Joe Pernice first gained recognition in the early 1990s as a founding member of the alternative country band Scud Mountain Boys. The group’s stripped-down sound and emotionally direct songwriting helped define a quieter, more reflective corner of the alt-country movement, earning a dedicated cult following.
After the band’s dissolution, Pernice launched a prolific solo career and formed the Pernice Brothers, a project that blended chamber pop, folk, and indie-rock influences. Their 2001 album The World Won’t End became a critical favorite, praised for its lush arrangements and bittersweet melodies. Pernice’s songwriting often explores themes of longing, regret, and memory, delivered in a soft, conversational vocal style that contrasts with the emotional weight of his lyrics.
Throughout his career, Pernice has been associated with a range of influential artists and collaborators within the indie and alt-country scenes. His work has also been connected stylistically and through touring or shared scenes with acts such as The New Pornographers, Teenage Fanclub, and The Smiths, all of whom share a melodic sensibility and literate songwriting approach.
Beyond music, Pernice has established himself as a respected author. He has written several novels and memoirs, including It Feels So Good When I Stop and Meat Is Murder, the latter inspired by the album of the same name by The Smiths. His literary work mirrors his musical sensibilities—intimate, reflective, and tinged with dry humor.
