One of the foundational texts of Yacht Rock, Steely Dan on Can't Buy a Thrill is basically the Talking Heads for guys with expense accounts - combining world music with realtively straight forward classic soft rock textures; the jazz influences that would become a hallmark of their work was still a little ways away from this material. That more straight forward sound led to a string of indelible timeless summertime hits they would never (try) to match - from the laid back lounger harmonies of DIRTY WORK to the samba rhythm of ONLY A FOOL WOULD DO THAT. The guitar led REELIN IN THE YEARS (one of only 2 singles released from the album) gives way to the frantic piano spasms of FIRE IN THE HOLE seamlessly.
