Lonesome Frontier is a new project featuring Danielle Howle, Barb Carbon, and Josh Roberts, three accomplished songwriters who have each gained notoriety fronting acclaimed indie/folk rock bands.
Danielle broke into Columbia’s Indie Folk scene in 1989 with her band Lay Quiet Awhile (Dan and Phil Cook) and went on to command regional and national favor with her follow-up project Danielle Howle and the Tantrums. She is one of South Carolina's most beloved songwriters and storytellers and has frequently toured and collaborated with artists like the Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins, and the Avett Brothers. She has also toured with Hootie and the Blowfish and regularly collaborates with their writer/guitarist, Mark Bryan.
Barb has a strong Southern following from her time with the Atlanta rock band the Aint Sisters, whose aggressive touring schedule and regular performances at regional festivals like Suwannee Roots Revival, Sweetwater 420 Fest, and the annual colossus, Suwannee Hulaween, positioned them as one of the South’s rising stars. She has opened for and collaborated with multiple national acts including Donna the Buffalo, Tank and the Bangas, Old Crow Medicine Show, and String Cheese Incident.
Josh is known regionally as the frontman for the roots rock band Josh Roberts and the Hinges, a mainstay of the Columbia and Charleston music scenes for over 18 years who have earned their place as regulars on the southern festival circuit, performing alongside acts like Umphrey’s MgGee, Dangermuffin, Widespread Panic, and Have Gun, Will Travel.
This new collective affords the listener an opportunity to hear new and lesser-known compositions – showcasing softer, more introspective compositions rarely, if ever, performed with their full bands – and to experience some of their more well-known songs performed in a beautifully stripped-down and accessible way. Utilizing a writer’s round format, the artists share the spotlight, each leading their original tunes as the others add subtle harmony and additional instrumentation, leaving ample sonic space for the intricate and powerful lyrics to shine and taking time between songs to tell stories and connect with the audience, and one another, on a deeper level. This intimate series aims to deliver the sense of connection, catharsis, community, and shared experience that we all need right now. Discover the surprising fellowship that can only be found when we gather together on the Lonesome Frontier.
