Los Dug Dug's are one of the foundational bands of Mexican rock, and one of the most collected names in all of psychedelia.

Formed in Durango and forged through late-60s Tijuana before landing in Mexico City, the band built a sound that pulled from The Beatles, the MC5, and heavy British psych while staying entirely their own. Their 1971 self-titled debut on RCA, sung in English, folded fuzzed-out guitar, organ, and flute into ten tracks of catchy, lysergic psych-pop. It was the first Mexican record to fully absorb the Anglo psychedelic language and hand it back sharper.

Then came Smog. Recorded in 1972 and sung in Spanish, it is the record collectors chase across continents: a heavier, proto-metal-leaning slab of acid rock threaded with flute that draws comparisons to early Jethro Tull and the raw charge of the MC5. For a lot of listeners it is simply the best rock album Mexico ever produced. Cambia, Cambia and El Loco followed, moving through softer psych-pop and moog-driven prog, and their scorching "Stupid People" became a defining moment of Avandaro, Mexico's Woodstock.

More than fifty years on, bandleader Armando Nava still carries Los Dug Dug's forward, and the records have only grown more sought after, trading for serious money among psych collectors worldwide.

On Saturday, August 22, they play Permanent Records Roadhouse in Los Angeles. The night opens at 9 with a set of Mexican psych on vinyl from Discos Lo Nuestro, and Los Dug Dug's take the room around 9:30 for two hours in a small 21+ space. It lands on the Saturday of Vinyl Con weekend, with collectors from around the world in town, and it is a rare chance to see a band most people only ever hear on vinyl, up close in a room that holds fewer than 100 people.
