The Ramayana is a Sanskrit epic over two millennia old — but while Prince Rama's heroic exile and return made him the ideal man, his wife Sita endured it all alongside him: kidnapped, recovered, and ultimately exiled again by her husband. Sitayama reimagines her perspective at the heart of the story, unpacking her emotional journey through original Indian Americana songs rooted in music and mythology. But beyond the epic, this is a deeply personal exploration of duty, morality, and honor — asking what it means to be the ideal woman, and what we lose when tradition outweighs our own humanity.

Payal is a Somerville-based musician of Indian descent who fuses Indian themes with American folk and punk roots — a genre she calls Indian Americana. Sitayama is her own inquiry: unpacking the values she was raised with and reconciling ancient narratives of gender and marriage with her own present-day journey.
