Soul, R&B and Funk from the Bay Area, California. Deep grooves, tight three-part harmonies, and songs that will uplift your spirit. The Heeters is comprised of Tom Quell (vocals/guitar), Nadav Beary (drums), and two members of The California Honeydrops (Lorenzo Loera on keys and Miles Blackwell on bass. Lorenzo and Tom co-write the songs, which have that classic soul sound & those catchy hooks--with a personality that makes them still unique and relevant within the world of modern music.
Straddling the smokey smoothness of soul’s ‘70s heyday and the freewheeling studio experimentation of modern pop and R&B, Motenko is one of Austin music’s best kept secrets. Whether serving as the backing band for Wild Child or front and center performing their own original music, Motenko stands out with a knack for tasteful texture and groove.
Inspired by the free creativity of the modern recording process, where the band exists in a state of constant play, repurposing sounds as instruments and embracing a liberal use of vocal layering, Motenko’s recordings have become increasingly experimental. Longtime fans of ’70s R&B like The Meters and the milestone recordings that came out of the mythical Muscle Shoals, their material has evolved to also embrace influences as diverse as Steve Lacy and Mac DeMarco. On the latest EP, To Grow, that diversity of sound comes through in a bold step toward a more experimental bedroom pop aesthetic, blending warped textures, layered vocals, and intimate songwriting with the groove and soul that have always been at the heart of the project.
Motenko served as the opening act for Wild Child on their national tour this year, with time set aside to write and record new songs that further evolve their bedroom soul aesthetic. With a steadily increasing rolodex of painstakingly curated sounds and a growing suite of production and instrumental tools to expand their sonic palette, one thing is certain: Motenko’s only limit is their imagination.
